I own far too many basses if i'm honest but i just can't bring myself to sell any! I'm a firm believer in sound at source. It simply starts at the beginning. My favourite go to bass was my MusicMan Sterling 5HH, it just sounds so clear across every note on the fretboard and has that MusicMan punch, growl and clarity to it, but I have recently purchased a Spector Euro 5 RST which seriously challenges my Musician in all departments so its a tough decision nowadays. My other favourite bass has to be my 1995 ( the year i bought it brand new ) Warwick Corvette Proline 5 string and i also really love how my Spector Legend Custom 5 plays and sounds. I do own some 4 and 6 string basses but i am predominantly a 5 string player for that flexibility across the fret board and of course the option of proper low notes. It is Bass after all... I play with fingers and a pick depending on the song style and whom i am playing with. I'm a firm believer in adding effects to Bass Guitar and why not! Pedal wise i love the EHX range as the build quality is so good and reliable and the effects don't kill your tone. My favourite EHX pedals are the POG, Bass Clone and of course the Big Muff! I have Boss and MXR pedals also and my favourite MXR has to be the Envelope Filter. The TC Electronics Polytune pedal is possibly one of the best pedals i own due to silent tuning whilst on stage and its pure accuracy for setting up intonation. I have just acquired a Darkglass Harmonic Booster pedal which is simply amazing for bringing out a clean tone which i mix with my overdriven tone. I use a Sansamp Tech 21 RBI Preamp which is then fed into my Trace Elliot AH350SMX Power Amp then into a 1x18 and a 4x10 cabinet which i built in the 90's. I also Bi-amp on a separate line which i split at source and send to my other POG, which is octaved up and sent through a Digitech GSP 1101 Guitar Preamp which is in turn then fed to a 2x12 custom built cabinet to add a "second guitar" at different points in certain songs.
I use Ernie Ball Strings which i order individually as i am awkward and like heavy strings which probably stresses the shit out of my guitar necks! My A and D are the same gauge!
My favourite bass players are Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Justin Chancellor ( who probably most influenced my sound ) Jack Bruce and John Paul Jones.
